The transition from President Biden to Vice President Kamala Harris has been notably seamless, even as questions arise about her ability to unite a coalition that spans from progressives to business centrists. This coalition has been crucial for the Democratic Party, especially as they navigate the complexities of the upcoming electoral landscape.
During the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, Democrats demonstrated a unified front in support of Vice President Harris. The event featured a diverse lineup of speakers, including President Biden, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, influential labor leaders, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. However, a lingering question remains: how sustainable is this unity among such a varied group?
Progressives appear to be rallying behind Harris as new details about her proposed economic strategy, dubbed “Kamalanomics,” have emerged. It seems she intends to uphold much of Biden’s economic agenda while also introducing additional incentives aimed at assisting home buyers. A notable highlight of her plan is the proposal to raise the corporate tax rate from 21 percent to an ambitious 28 percent.
Labor leaders, who form a significant voting bloc in key battleground states, also took the stage to express their robust support for Harris. However, it is important to note the absence of Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who previously spoke at the Republican National Convention last month and appears to have been overlooked by D.N.C. organizers.
In response to the Democratic convention, former President Donald Trump has been vocal, branding Harris as “an economy wrecker” during his address to factory workers in Pennsylvania on Monday. This rhetoric is part of his broader strategy to undermine the Democratic ticket.
The question remains: will Harris’s supporters from the corporate sector remain steadfast? Thus far, she seems to have retained the support of influential business leaders, including Alex Karp, co-founder of Palantir. Moreover, affluent donors continue to contribute generously to her campaign, attending events throughout the country and making their presence felt at the Democratic convention.
