Kamala Harris Honors President Biden at Democratic National Convention

In a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago, Vice President Kamala Harris took the stage to pay heartfelt tribute to President Joe Biden. Expressing profound appreciation for his leadership, Harris stated, “Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation, and for all you will continue to do. We are forever grateful to you.” This weeklong convention is seen as a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party, as they aim to bolster Harris’s candidacy in the upcoming presidential election against Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, whom many in the party view as a significant threat to the nation’s future.

With Biden stepping aside from the race, Harris now finds herself as the leading Democratic nominee, facing the formidable task of winning over a divided electorate that is still forming its opinions about the forthcoming election. During the convention, Biden delivered an emotional farewell speech, emphasizing his lack of resentment regarding the end of his term and urging party unity behind Harris. “I made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you,” Biden reflected, receiving a warm four-minute ovation along with chants of “Thank you, Joe,” to which he responded, “America, I love you.”

Biden reminisced about his decision to choose Harris as his running mate, calling it “the best decision I made in my whole career.” He praised her resilience, experience, and integrity, noting that her journey exemplifies the very essence of the American story, drawing parallels to his own path as Vice President.

After Biden’s speech, Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, joined him on stage, sharing a warm embrace alongside Biden’s family. Earlier, she had reiterated her gratitude, affirming, “We are forever grateful to you.”

Hillary Clinton Commends Harris’s Potential

Among the many notable figures who showed support for Harris was former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In her tribute, Clinton highlighted Harris’s potential to shatter the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” and become the first female president of the United States. Clinton, who was the Democratic nominee in 2016, emphasized that Harris’s potential success would pave the way for future generations of leaders. She commended Biden for stepping aside, stating, “Now we are writing a new chapter in America’s story.”

The convention featured a diverse lineup of speakers, including New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who endorsed Harris while addressing the contentious issue of the war in Gaza, a topic that has deeply divided the Democratic Party.

Biden Acknowledges Anti-War Protests

Outside the convention venue, thousands of demonstrators gathered to voice their opposition to the Biden-Harris administration’s support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Just minutes into Biden’s speech, protesters from the Abandon Biden movement raised a banner reading: “STOP ARMING ISRAEL.” In response, the lights in that section of the convention were quickly dimmed, and the sign was removed, prompting Biden supporters to chant “We love Joe.”

Despite the disruption, Biden acknowledged the protesters, stating, “Those protesters out in the street have a point. A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides.” He reiterated his call for a ceasefire that includes the release of hostages taken by the Palestinian militant group Hamas during the events of October 7, 2023.
