Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken is currently engaged in a crucial diplomatic tour across the Middle East, with his latest stop in Egypt on Tuesday. His primary objective is to advocate for a cease-fire amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas.

During his visit to Egypt, Mr. Blinken is expected to communicate with Hamas leadership through intermediaries, aiming to facilitate ongoing discussions for a potential truce and the release of hostages still held in Gaza. According to a senior administration official, negotiations are anticipated to resume in Egypt this week, following two days of intensive talks in Qatar that concluded on Friday without any immediate resolutions.

On the previous day, Mr. Blinken met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, where they discussed the evolving situation and the possibility of a deal. In Egypt, he had an important meeting with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at his summer palace in El Alamein, as well as discussions with Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. Following their discussions, the Egyptian president’s office released a statement indicating that Mr. el-Sisi is eager to emphasize the urgent need to end the ongoing conflict. He echoed Mr. Blinken’s concerns about the potential for violence to spread throughout the region.

Furthermore, Mr. el-Sisi highlighted that any cease-fire proposal must be accompanied by a broader international acknowledgment of a Palestinian state and the realization of the long-discussed two-state solution.

In his conversations with Israeli officials, Mr. Blinken conveyed that Prime Minister Netanyahu had agreed to a proposal from the Biden administration aimed at reconciling some remaining differences with Hamas to advance towards a cease-fire agreement. However, both Israeli and Hamas representatives have expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of an imminent breakthrough. During his meetings with Israeli leadership, Mr. Blinken underscored the critical nature of this moment, stating that it could be “perhaps the last opportunity” to forge a cease-fire agreement.
