Military analysts observed on Monday that Russian troops defending a narrow strip of territory nestled between a river and the Ukrainian border are now at a heightened risk of encirclement. This precarious situation has arisen following Ukraine’s strategic bombing of the bridges that serve as the sole routes for resupply and potential retreat for these Russian forces.

In a bold counteroffensive that has been underway for nearly two weeks, Ukrainian troops have made significant gains, swiftly breaching the inadequately defended border positions. They have rapidly advanced along major highways, capturing numerous towns and villages, and pushing deeper into Russian territory. This unexpected offensive has caught the Russian military off-guard, creating a sense of urgency within their ranks.

Recent bombings specifically targeted the bridges spanning the Seym River—a crucial area bordered by both the river and the Ukrainian frontier, as well as a section of Russian territory already under Ukrainian control. The destruction of these bridges raises the alarming possibility of trapping the Russian forces stationed in this region. According to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force and social media updates from Russian officials and military commentators, all three bridges in this vital area have either been destroyed or severely damaged.

In a triumphant message on Telegram, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk celebrated the successful targeting of these key infrastructures, stating, “Minus one more bridge!”

The looming threat of encirclement poses yet another challenge for a Russian Army that has struggled to adapt to Ukraine’s unprecedented incursion, which began on August 6. This operation has not only disrupted Russian defenses but has also injected a renewed sense of optimism among Ukrainian forces, who had previously been facing setbacks along other parts of the front line.
