Tragic Yacht Incident off the Coast of Sicily

In a harrowing incident on Monday, a yacht carrying 22 individuals tragically sank during a fierce storm near the Sicilian coast, resulting in one confirmed fatality and six individuals reported missing, according to Italian officials.

Italy’s firefighter corps has mobilized a dedicated search and rescue team, commencing operations at dawn near Porticello, approximately 12 miles east of Palermo, the Sicilian capital. As of now, 15 survivors have been rescued from the tumultuous waters.

Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the firefighter corps, provided updates in a telephone interview, indicating that specialized divers have been dispatched from both Naples and Sassari in Sardinia. These experts are set to conduct a thorough search of the sunken vessel, which lies about 50 meters (approximately 165 feet) beneath the surface.

Cari further elaborated on the challenging nature of the recovery operations, describing the depths involved as “complicated,” necessitating the involvement of divers with specialized training and equipment.

The yacht, known as the Bayesian, is a 56-meter-long Italian sailing vessel that was first launched in 2008. According to information from marinetraffic.com, a website dedicated to tracking maritime traffic, the Bayesian operates under the flag of the United Kingdom.
