On Monday, ABC News announced the appointment of Almin Karamehmedovic as the network’s new president. Karamehmedovic, who has served as the senior executive producer of World News Tonight with David Muir, steps into a pivotal role overseeing a significant yet evolving television news organization that includes popular programs such as Good Morning America, 20/20, and Nightline.
At 52 years of age, Mr. Karamehmedovic’s promotion places him at the helm of a news division that, while facing challenges, remains influential. He will also be responsible for managing the network’s coverage of major events, including the highly anticipated 2024 presidential election, as well as the ABC News Studios division.
With over two decades of experience at ABC News, Karamehmedovic has risen through the ranks, starting as a freelance video editor and ultimately reaching the pinnacle of the television news industry. His ascension is seen as a positive development for David Muir, who anchors ABC’s flagship newscast, as it positions a trusted ally in a leadership role.

In response, networks have launched streaming services like ABC News Live to capture and retain audiences, but these platforms have yet to replicate the robust viewership enjoyed by network news programs during their peak, when icons like Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, and Dan Rather became household names.
Throughout his career at ABC News, Karamehmedovic has been part of significant journalistic endeavors. Notably, he oversaw the success of World News Tonight with David Muir, which consistently ranks as the highest-rated network newscast, often outperforming other non-news programs.
Beginning his journey with ABC News as a freelancer in 1998, Mr. Karamehmedovic has held various positions within the network. His reporting assignments have included embedding with the U.S. Army during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and traveling to Darfur in 2005 to cover the genocide there. In 2008, he joined Nightline, ABC’s Peabody Award-winning evening news program, where he served as executive producer before taking on the role at World News Tonight.
