The Impact of Ukraine’s Incursion on Kursk

In the Russian city of Kursk, located several dozen miles from the epicenter of the conflict, the ramifications of Ukraine’s unexpected incursion into Russian territory are palpable, even if not immediately visible. Since the onset of this military offensive on August 6, more than 130,000 individuals, as reported by Russian authorities, have either fled border regions or been evacuated from them. Many of these displaced persons have found refuge in Kursk, a city with a population of approximately half a million.

During a recent visit to the city, it was evident that the humanitarian situation was pressing. Long lines formed as evacuees sought assistance with accommodations and essential supplies like blankets and food. The atmosphere was tense; people jostled for position, at times shoving each other, yet they remained unfazed as sirens blared repeatedly, signaling the potential threat of drone or missile strikes.

In Kursk, the scars of war are visible. A building stands damaged, its structure marred by debris from falling missiles, a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict. Sirens sound several times each day, instilling a sense of unease among the residents.

Within the temporary shelters, evacuees gather for meals, sharing their experiences over dinner as they try to navigate their new reality. Many walls in these shelters are adorned with posters, each one a plea for information about loved ones who remain in areas impacted by the Ukrainian advance. One such poster was placed by Lyubov Prilutskaya, a 36-year-old resident of Kursk, who has lost contact with her parents living in Sudzha, a town just six miles from the border that Ukraine claims to have fully captured.
