Experience the Comfort of Springline: A New Kind of Work Resort
As visitors step into the Springline complex in Menlo Park, California, they are immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of sophistication and tranquility, reminiscent of luxury hotels. The space is adorned with off-white walls that boast a Roman clay finish, alongside a stylish gray-and-white marble coffee table. A white leather bench sits beneath an impressive 8-by-4 resin canvas that boldly proclaims, “Hello, tomorrow.” The signature scent of Springline, an inviting blend of salty sea air, white water lily, dry musk, and honeydew melon, subtly enhances the experience.
However, Springline isn’t just another upscale hotel; it is an innovative “work resort,” where the designs of office spaces draw inspiration from the aesthetics and comforts of high-end accommodations. This sprawling 6.4-acre town square is conveniently located just steps away from the Menlo Park Caltrain station, right in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. The complex features two premium office buildings, nine diverse restaurants, outdoor workspaces, and terraces designed for social interaction and networking. Additionally, it offers gym facilities, a state-of-the-art golf simulator, an upscale Italian grocery store, and a residential building with 183 units. True to the spirit of a resort, Springline also hosts an array of community events, ranging from craft cocktail fairs to lively silent discos.
The residential building’s lobby entrance at Springline is a welcoming sight, inviting residents and guests alike into this vibrant community. Furthermore, the plaza serves as a communal space, fostering connections among individuals in a relaxed, inviting environment.
In light of the current office vacancy rate hovering around 20 percent in the United States, as noted by Cushman & Wakefield, downtown business districts are exploring various strategies to entice employees back into the workplace. Among these strategies are resort-like work environments that offer comforts that rival those found in the home.
The innovative concept of a work resort is rooted in the allure of beautiful locations and aesthetically pleasing architecture. Matthias Hollwich, founding principal of the global design firm HWKN, encapsulates this vision: “It’s about creating an image of a resort, a stunning space that compels you to think, ‘I want to experience this, I want to be a part of it.’” He is currently working on designing a similar work resort complex called Sky Island at Canada Water in London. “It’s distinct from home. It stands apart from traditional office buildings. It’s something novel and exciting.”
