The Evolving Landscape of Abortion Services Post-Dobbs

Providing abortion services has always been a challenging endeavor, characterized by razor-thin profit margins and a host of logistical hurdles. The Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Dobbs v. Jackson two years ago, which dismantled the constitutional right to an abortion, has intensified the difficulties faced by reproductive health providers.

In the wake of the Roe v. Wade reversal, many abortion clinics are now exploring alternative markets for their services. Some are relocating to abortion-friendly states or expanding their operations there, aiming to cater to a more concentrated client base. A recent analysis by The New York Times revealed that out-of-state travel for abortions has more than doubled in 2023 compared to 2019, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all recorded abortions.

Caitlin Myers, a professor of economics at Middlebury College who monitors clinic openings and closures nationwide, estimates that at least 12 new clinics have opened in direct response to the Dobbs decision, with an additional six moving their locations after experiencing state-level abortion bans.

However, many clinics are discovering that even in blue states, the environment can be almost as challenging as in red ones. For instance, in September 2022, Dr. Matthew Reeves signed a lease for a new branch of the DuPont Clinic in Beverly Hills, California, as he sought to broaden the reach of his reproductive health clinic beyond its original base in Washington, D.C.

In January of that same year, as uncertainty loomed over the future of Roe v. Wade, Dr. Reeves and Jennefer Russo, the chief medical officer of the DuPont Clinic, began contemplating the establishment of an additional practice in a state that would ensure access to abortions.

“As the implications of Dobbs became clearer, it was evident that the Supreme Court was likely to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Dr. Russo commented in an interview earlier this year. “Our strategy was to create a new option for patients who lived west of the Mississippi, allowing them to access care in Los Angeles.”
