Massive Blaze Erupts at Somerset House in London
On Saturday, more than 100 firefighters were mobilized to combat a significant fire that erupted at the iconic Somerset House, a renowned arts centre located in London. A towering column of smoke was visible, rising ominously from the historic neoclassical structure as flames engulfed parts of the roof.
According to reports from the London Fire Brigade, a total of 15 fire engines were dispatched to the scene to help extinguish the flames. The first alarm was raised at precisely 11:59 am local time on Saturday, although the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
A spokesperson for the Fire Brigade stated, “Crews are currently addressing the flames located in the roof section of the building. To aid in firefighting efforts, two of the Brigade’s 32-meter ladders have been deployed to the site.”
The entire Somerset House complex has been closed to the public as a precautionary measure, and traffic disruptions in the surrounding area are anticipated as emergency services continue their work. Originally, Somerset House was scheduled to host a vibrant day of breakdancing activities on Saturday, but those plans have been halted due to the ongoing emergency.
In an official statement, the historic arts centre reassured the public, “All staff and visitors are safe, and the site is currently closed.” They added, “The London Fire Brigade responded swiftly, and we are collaborating closely with them to manage and contain the fire.”
