Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts to Resolve Gaza Conflict

High-level discussions aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza concluded without an immediate resolution on Friday. However, officials from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar announced that negotiations would persist into the following week. These mediators are racing against time to secure a cease-fire that might prevent a broader regional escalation.

This update followed two days of intensive talks held in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Key officials from the U.S., Israel, Egypt, and Qatar were involved in these discussions, which focused on reconciling the outstanding differences between Israel and Hamas. U.S. and regional stakeholders are keenly aware that progress in these negotiations could mitigate or even halt an expected Iranian-led response to the recent killings of high-ranking Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, both of whom are supported by Iran.

On Friday, officials from the U.S., Iran, and Israel revealed that Iran had opted to postpone its retaliation against Israel, allowing mediators to continue their efforts toward achieving a cease-fire in Gaza. Following the first day of talks, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar, reached out to Iran’s acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri Kani. During their conversation, Mr. Al Thani urged Iran to exercise restraint in light of the ongoing cease-fire discussions taking place in Doha. This communication was confirmed by two Iranian officials and three additional sources who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions.

On Friday, Mr. Al Thani engaged in a follow-up conversation with Mr. Bagheri Kani. Both officials emphasized the critical need for calm and de-escalation in the region, as reported by the Qatari Foreign Ministry. Mr. Bagheri Kani noted that the cease-fire negotiations were at a “sensitive” stage, indicating the precarious nature of the ongoing talks.

In a joint statement released on Friday, Egypt, Qatar, and the United States informed the public that mediators had put forward a “bridging proposal” to both Israel and Hamas. This proposal aligns with the terms initially outlined by President Biden on May 31 and subsequently endorsed by the United Nations Security Council.
