Surge in Israeli Settler Attacks on Palestinians

In recent months, there has been a significant uptick in violent incidents involving Israeli settlers targeting Palestinian communities in the West Bank. However, a particularly alarming riot that occurred on Thursday in the village of Jit has prompted a swift and unusual response from Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Notably, Netanyahu’s coalition government comprises several members with strong ties to West Bank settlers, making this rebuke noteworthy.

According to a statement released by the Israeli military, “Dozens of Israeli civilians, some of whom were masked, infiltrated the town of Jit, where they proceeded to set fire to vehicles and structures, while also hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails.” In response to the chaos, the military reported that its forces, alongside the Israeli Border Police, were dispatched to the scene. They managed to disperse the rioters by firing shots into the air and subsequently removing the Israeli civilians from the area.

The Palestinian Authority reported that during the attack, one Palestinian was killed and another sustained critical injuries. In light of these events, the Israeli military stated that it is currently “looking into” the reports of the fatality and has initiated an investigation in cooperation with other security agencies into what it described as “this serious incident.” They also noted that one participant in the riot has been arrested and transferred to the police for further questioning.

In a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, it emphasized that Netanyahu “takes seriously the riots that transpired this evening in the village of Jit, which involved harm to both life and property perpetrated by Israelis entering the village.” The statement pledged to identify and prosecute those responsible for “any criminal act” associated with the riot.

Furthermore, the Israeli military condemned “incidents of this nature and the rioters, who disrupt security, law, and order.” They accused those involved in the violence of diverting troops and security forces away from their primary mission of combating terrorism and safeguarding the security of civilians.

This riot unfolded amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, now approaching its 11th month. This prolonged period has been marked not only by increased military operations against suspected terrorism in the occupied West Bank but also by a worrying escalation in violent attacks by settlers against Palestinian individuals and communities.
