The Inspiring Journey of Shola, the Canine Hero
All dogs, without a doubt, are born with an inherent sense of greatness. Most express this greatness in their own unique, tail-wagging ways. However, a few extraordinary ones — like Shola, a remarkable 9-year-old English Shepherd — have had greatness thrust upon them in the most profound manner.
In her first act of heroism, Shola bravely navigated treacherous mountainous terrain and battled harsh weather conditions to aid in the search for missing persons in England’s central Peak District and other rural locales. Her dedication to helping others showcased the true spirit of a canine hero.
Shola’s second act began in 2019 when, at the tender age of 4, she was diagnosed with an inherited and incurable form of blindness. Concerned for her well-being, her owners sought the expertise of an eye specialist to better understand her condition. Eventually, a sample of her DNA, taken from a simple cheek swab, found its way to the Canine Genetics Center at the University of Cambridge.
Through meticulous research using Shola’s DNA alongside samples from other English Shepherds, scientists were able to identify the specific mutation responsible for her blindness. This groundbreaking discovery led to the development of a genetic test to detect the mutation in other dogs. Their significant findings were recently published in a paper in Genes, a reputable peer-reviewed journal.
While this discovery arrived too late to restore Shola’s sight, her genetic contribution has already paved the way to protect future generations of her breed. “We’ll never have any more blind puppies,” stated Jackie Graves, 62, who bred Shola and whose current litter comes from two dogs that have tested negative for the mutation. This development not only honors Shola’s legacy but also brings hope to countless dogs and their owners in the future.
