Onstage Protest: A Chilling Tribute to Lives Lost
The actors on stage reached into their pockets, each retrieving a Kenyan flag, which they then unfurled before a hushed audience packed into the theater. In a solemn and haunting manner, they began to recite the names of the many individuals they allege were killed by security forces during the months of unrest that have shaken Kenya. As the flags waved gracefully in the air, several audience members wrapped their own flags around themselves, some visibly moved to tears.
“The flag is no longer just a piece of cloth fluttering overhead, detached from the people,” remarked Ngatia Kimathi, one of the performers involved in the poignant play staged in the capital, Nairobi. In an interview, he elaborated on the profound significance of the symbol in these turbulent times.
“The flag has transformed into a beacon of unity and a representation of the people’s power,” Mr. Kimathi continued, reflecting on his personal experience of having been arrested during the protests. “In this era filled with both grief and hope, everyone is clinging to it.”
Kenya’s legal framework imposes strict regulations regarding the use of its national flag, which displays two crossed spears and a shield against a backdrop of black, red, green, and white stripes. The law dictates that the flag is to be displayed exclusively on government properties or during public holidays, with violators facing potential prosecution. These regulations were first instituted in the 1960s to prevent the desecration of the flag, and an attempt to amend these laws several years ago ultimately failed to pass in the Senate.
As the performance unfolded, the weight of the moment became palpable. The flagpoles in front of the Kenyan Parliament building stood tall, flying the national flag—a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and the indomitable spirit of a people united in their quest for change.
