Hezbollah’s Calculated Restraint Amidst Rising Tensions

A day after the assassination of a prominent commander from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, the organization promised to retaliate against Israel. However, more than two weeks have passed, and a significant response has yet to materialize. Hezbollah now finds itself in a precarious position, attempting to balance its desire for vengeance with the potential repercussions of escalating conflict at home.

Lebanon is currently entrenched in a profound political and economic crisis, which has persisted for several years. The Lebanese populace, weary of ongoing strife, is increasingly disillusioned. The country has been on a tumultuous path since its civil war erupted in 1975, with successive crises compounding the suffering of its citizens. Should Hezbollah embark on another grueling war with Israel, it risks alienating the very people it claims to protect.

The Lebanese state is a mosaic of various factions and sects, often characterized by a paralyzed and ineffective caretaker government. Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite Muslim organization, occupies a unique position as both a member of this coalition government and the de facto authority in Lebanon. As the most influential political and military entity in the country, Hezbollah has much to lose and is acutely aware of the need to proceed with caution.

Over the past three decades, Hezbollah has solidified its power by effectively outmaneuvering its domestic adversaries in a political system that is designed to distribute power among different sects. The group has amassed a formidable arsenal, surpassing even the capabilities of the national military. Moreover, it has established control over critical infrastructure throughout the nation. In doing so, Hezbollah has significantly improved the lives of its constituents, particularly among the Shiite community, which has historically faced marginalization.

No other political entity in Lebanon possesses the resources or organizational capacity to support their sects as effectively as Hezbollah does, further entrenching its dominance and influence.
