Dolphin Encounters Turn Dangerous Along Japan’s Central Coast

As beachgoers enjoy the sun and surf, they are constantly reminded to be cautious, not of sharks, but of dolphins—yes, dolphins. For the third consecutive year, these playful marine mammals have posed an unexpected threat to swimmers, leading to a series of alarming encounters.
In Wakasa Bay, located approximately 200 miles west of Tokyo, a notable surge in dolphin-related injuries has been reported, with at least 47 individuals affected since 2022. While many of the injuries have been minor bites to the hands, there have been several alarming cases requiring hospitalization for serious wounds or broken bones.
In 2022 alone, 21 incidents of dolphin attacks were documented along a stretch of beaches near the town of Echizen, according to the Fukui Prefectural police. This phenomenon was humorously dubbed the “dolphin threat summer” by local media outlets. One man recounted his terrifying experience of being bitten on the arm by a dolphin while swimming close to the shore, describing how the dolphin attempted to push him underwater in what appeared to be an aggressive display.
The situation escalated in 2023, with attacks shifting to the beaches near the town of Mihama. In this year, 10 additional injuries were reported, including a serious incident where a man sustained broken ribs. Since July 21, 2023, local officials have confirmed that 16 individuals have been injured by dolphins, primarily off the shores of Mihama and the adjacent city of Tsuruga. Among these victims, two required extensive medical attention for severe hand injuries that demanded dozens of stitches.
To alert beachgoers of this unusual danger, local authorities have placed posters at various beaches warning of potential dolphin attacks. The unexpected behavior of these dolphins has left many questioning what might be causing such aggression and how to safely enjoy the waters without fear.
