Ukraine Escalates Drone Strikes Against Russian Military Airfields

In a bold move, Ukraine has initiated a significant drone offensive targeting military airfields across Russia, successfully striking and inflicting damage on at least two installations. This strategy comes as part of a broader ground assault within Russian territory that has taken the Kremlin by surprise and shifted the ongoing narrative of the conflict.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the drone strikes occurred on Wednesday night, with reports indicating that four airfields deep within Russian borders were targeted. Analysts note that this operation appears to be one of the most extensive Ukrainian drone attacks to date, following a series of similar strikes aimed at Russian air bases situated far from the frontline.

The strikes were particularly focused on airfields in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces made an unexpected incursion last week, successfully breaching the border and gaining ground in the area.

On the other hand, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine had launched a total of 117 drones across multiple Russian regions, including those housing the targeted airfields. However, the ministry did not provide any details regarding damage incurred. In contrast, satellite imagery verified by The New York Times revealed that Russian air bases in Savasleyka and Borisoglebsk, located 400 miles and 150 miles respectively from the Ukrainian border, suffered notable damage.

The satellite images indicate that at least two hangars were destroyed, and a warehouse sustained damage. It remains unclear whether any aircraft were affected by the strikes. Furthermore, images from the other two airfields that Ukraine claimed to have targeted did not exhibit significant destruction.

Ukraine’s strategic focus on attacking Russian airfields stems from the desire to undermine Moscow’s capacity to conduct heavy airstrikes against Ukrainian positions and civilian areas. This latest development marks a critical escalation in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the evolving tactics employed by both sides.
