The Resurrection of Tablets: Desktop Mode with Android 15
With the desktop mode introduced in Android 15, tablets are entering a new era. These innovations elevate the user experience to a higher level, revolutionizing the versatility of tablets for both professional and personal use.
The Resurrection of Tablets: A New Era with Desktop Mode
Since their introduction, tablets have generally been limited to simple functions such as following online newspapers that we couldn’t read on the small screens of mobile phones, and watching YouTube videos. Despite their powerful processors, it is a reality that we have never given these devices the importance they deserve. In fact, manufacturers have taken the route of offering users special Bluetooth keyboards to allow tablets to be used like desktop computers. Microsoft has tried to convince users about the potential of these devices by marketing tablets that run on the Windows operating system. However, most people around the world have not been very receptive to the idea of using their tablets like a PC, except in emergencies.
Now, we are facing an exciting initiative to transform tablets back into desktop computers. Google has added an option called “desktop mode” to the new version of Android. This innovation, which emerged in the Android 15 Beta version, allows users to go to the ‘Recent Apps’ view and encounter a new button labeled “Desktop” when they open a dropdown menu for an application. Tapping this button enables the application you are in to turn into a freely movable window. In other words, you can adjust the sizes of the application windows and rearrange them just like in the Windows operating system.
- The application can be minimized,
- Maximized,
- Added to the side, or
- Connected to another window.
Additionally, at the very bottom of the screen, there is a taskbar that contains all the currently open software. Will laptops be thrown to the side? Since this interface resembles that of Windows or MacOS quite closely, tablet users might finally be convinced to use their devices like a PC with the help of a keyboard. Of course, you will still be able to run Android applications on tablets, but you will achieve a much more efficient working experience with a desktop or laptop PC appearance that you are used to. It seems that tablets may finally break the curse they have been stuck with for years.
So, will this desktop mode also be active for large-screen phones? The answer to this question is still uncertain, but we are eagerly awaiting developments in Android 15.
