Mass Protest Against Slovak Government in Bratislava

On Tuesday, approximately 20,000 citizens filled the streets of Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, to voice their dissent against Prime Minister Robert Fico’s administration. The demonstrators accused the government of systematically dismantling essential cultural institutions within the country.

The protest was organized by two opposition parties, highlighting significant concerns primarily directed at the decisions made by Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová and Justice Minister Boris Susko. This rally followed a similar event held by civic activists just a day earlier, reflecting growing public unrest.

• The protesters specifically criticized Minister Šimkovičová for her recent moves to dismiss directors of prominent cultural establishments such as the Slovak National Theatre and the National Gallery.
• In response to the backlash, Šimkovičová defended her actions, alleging that the opposition and media were attempting to undermine her authority and the government’s agenda.

Justice Minister Boris Susko has also faced considerable scrutiny due to his controversial reforms to criminal law. These changes included:

• The abolition of the special prosecutor service.
• Significant reductions in penalties for corruption and other serious crimes, including the introduction of suspended sentences.
• A drastic shortening of the statute of limitations for various offenses.

Adding to the public outcry, Susko recently suspended the prison sentence of Dušan Kováčik, the former special prosecutor convicted of corruption, further intensifying the frustration among the populace.

Unlike previous demonstrations, which often featured speeches from political figures, Tuesday’s protest shifted focus. The event aimed to amplify the voices of ordinary citizens, emphasizing the community’s collective concerns and aspirations for the future of Slovakia’s cultural landscape.
