A Surge of Ukrainian Forces

The scenes unfolding in the Russian countryside were unmistakably Russian in character. A Gazprom facility stood prominently, flanked by flags displaying the nation’s iconic three horizontal stripes of white, blue, and red. Nearby, a Pyatyorochka supermarket added to the familiar landscape. However, the true narrative was being shaped by the Ukrainian soldiers posting videos from the front lines, their expressions filled with exhilaration as they showcased the ease with which they had breached the border and navigated through Russian defenses in just a week’s time.

In the town of Sverdlikovo, a Ukrainian soldier climbed onto the shoulders of a comrade, triumphantly tearing down a wooden post anchored to a town council building, sending the Russian flag tumbling to the ground. Meanwhile, in Daryino, situated a mere five miles to the west, other soldiers joined in the revelry, seizing another Russian flag. “Just throw it away,” one of them chuckled, displaying a playful grin as another flexed his muscles in a display of strength.

The Audacious Offensive

On August 6, Ukraine launched a bold military offensive, meticulously planned and executed in secrecy, with the objective of altering the course of a war that had seen them gradually losing ground, town by town, as Russian forces advanced in the east. This operation came as a surprise even to Kyiv’s closest allies, including the United States, and stretched the boundaries of how Western military equipment could be utilized within Russian territory.

For Russia, this event marked a moment of profound shock, reminiscent of the mercenary Yevgeny V. Prigozhin’s unexpected march on Moscow in June 2023. The highly regarded security apparatus that President Vladimir V. Putin had painstakingly constructed began to falter in the wake of this surprise attack, failing in its fundamental duty to protect its citizens. Furthermore, the unwritten social contract that had largely defined Mr. Putin’s 30-month campaign—allowing most Russians to go about their daily lives while he waged war—was cast into significant doubt once more.
