Major Heroin Seizure at Burgas Port in Bulgaria
In a significant operation, Bulgarian authorities confiscated approximately 436 kilograms of heroin at the Black Sea port of Burgas, as reported by the district prosecutor’s office on Monday. This substantial drug seizure was concealed within 434 packages that were hidden inside a trailer, which had been officially declared as cargo. The estimated street value of the heroin is around 35 million euros.
District prosecutor Georgi Chinev commented, “This represents the largest quantity of drugs ever seized in the Burgas area since the establishment of statistical records.” The trailer containing the illicit cargo had arrived at the end of July, transported via land from Kyrgyzstan to the Georgian Black Sea port of Batumi, before making its way into Burgas.
Initially, the trailer was intended to continue its journey to Alexandroupolis, Greece. However, its prolonged stay at the port raised suspicions, as noted by anti-drug unit chief Ivan Sokolov. Following an X-ray inspection of the trailer, the hidden heroin was discovered.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not identified any individuals linked to this cross-border drug trafficking operation, according to Chinev. Bulgaria is strategically positioned on a major drug route from the Middle East to Western Europe, and in recent years, the country has implemented extensive measures to combat drug trafficking.
Under Bulgarian law, a conviction for drug trafficking can result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years, reflecting the nation’s commitment to tackling this serious issue.
