Many users attempting to tune into the conversation, which was broadcast through the platform’s audio livestreaming feature known as Spaces, faced frustrating interruptions. Instead of the expected conversation, they were met with silence and an error message stating: “Details not available.” This led to widespread complaints about access issues, particularly on both desktop and mobile devices. For those fortunate enough to connect, the experience was far from smooth, as they were greeted with hold music rather than the live dialogue.
Originally scheduled to commence at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, the event saw fluctuating attendance numbers as users struggled to join the livestream, with listener counts swinging between 100,000 and over 700,000. In response to the technical setbacks, Musk suggested that the glitches were the result of a cyberattack known as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. Such attacks aim to overwhelm servers with excessive traffic, ultimately taking them offline.
Musk remarked, “Worst case, we will proceed with a smaller number of live listeners and post the conversation later,” indicating a willingness to adapt to the situation. However, the authenticity of the claimed DDoS attack could not be immediately verified.
Further adding to the intrigue, Musk asserted that the system had been stress-tested earlier that day with 8 million concurrent listeners. He had even dedicated his Sunday evening to ensuring the service’s reliability by streaming himself playing a video game, highlighting his commitment to a seamless experience.
