Putin Blames the West for Ukraine’s Incursion

In a strongly worded response, President Vladimir Putin directed his ire at Western nations during a televised meeting with his senior officials yesterday. His comments reflected the Kremlin’s unease over Ukraine’s unexpected incursion into Russian territory, which has lasted for over a week. “The West is fighting us through the hands of the Ukrainians,” Putin asserted. “The enemy will certainly receive a response that they deserve, and all our objectives will, without a doubt, be accomplished.”

As Moscow scrambled to formulate a response to the incursion in the Kursk region, reports emerged that Russian forces continued their aggressive bombardment of Ukrainian positions in the eastern part of the country, according to Kyiv military officials. In a video link with Putin, the acting governor of the Kursk region revealed that 28 towns and villages were now under Ukrainian control, indicating that Ukrainian troops had advanced nearly 12 kilometers into Russian territory. In contrast, the head of Ukraine’s armed forces claimed control over more than double that area, stating, “about 1,000 square kilometers.”

Background:

Analysts suggest that Ukraine’s strategic move serves two primary purposes: first, to draw Russian forces away from the front lines in eastern Ukraine, and second, to secure territory that could potentially be used as leverage in future peace negotiations. Despite these developments, Putin maintained that this attack would not alter his stance in negotiations.
