Life on Thitu Island: A Struggle Amidst Tensions

For travelers arriving at the remote Thitu Island, the stark reality of China’s territorial ambitions becomes apparent within moments. Surrounding this small landmass, a community of just a few hundred Filipinos call it home, dozens of Chinese ships can be seen, a testament to the ongoing geopolitical struggle.

Despite the looming tensions, everyday life on Thitu Island unfolds at a tranquil pace. The eastern shore is lined with small wooden fishing boats that sway gently in the breeze, while the main shelters are rough houses constructed from plywood, scrap lumber, and tarps. On a recent evening, locals gathered near the beach, engaged in the age-old practice of deboning fish, while others ventured into the tide pools, armed with fishing spears, seeking the evening’s catch.

However, this peaceful facade masks a deeper reality: Thitu Island is a contested territory. Just beyond its shores, China has deployed a formidable flotilla of coast guard ships and maritime militia vessels, asserting its claim over the region. Furthermore, on a neighboring reef, a military base has been constructed, its lights twinkling at night like a distant city, a constant reminder of the increasing Chinese presence that has alarmed the Philippine government.

For nearly half a century, the Philippines has maintained its occupation of Thitu, which it refers to as Pag-asa, meaning “hope.” In response to the escalating tensions, the Philippine government is investing in upgrading the dilapidated military facilities located at the southern end of the island. Moreover, there is a concerted effort to encourage more Filipinos to relocate to Thitu, with the belief that an increased population will fortify its claim to the island and help mitigate hostilities with China.

As the situation continues to evolve, Philippine troops remain vigilant, keeping a watchful eye for Chinese vessels navigating the Spratlys. The resilience of the island’s residents amidst such geopolitical strife underscores both the challenges they face and their unwavering spirit.
