Big Change in Nova Launcher: Developer Team is Shrinking
A big change is happening in Nova Launcher! What effects will the shrinking of the development team have on the future of the app? Read our article for details and possible innovations.
Amazing Developments in Nova Launcher
The popular Android launcher Nova Launcher is facing a major change with a significant shift in its team. Following the layoffs of most staff, the project is now solely continued by Kevin Barry. As the original creator, Barry continues to manage the project as the only full-time developer.
Despite the layoffs, Barry maintains his determination to continue development. However, he admitted that the next major version of Nova Launcher will be less comprehensive than initially planned. Rob Wainwright, one of the developers who was laid off, stated on the project’s Discord server that, “Working on the app with fewer people will inevitably slow down development.” Nevertheless, he expressed that updates would continue in some form.
With a strong presence in the Android community, Nova Launcher is known for its extensive customization options offered to users. The app was acquired by the mobile analytics company Branch in July 2022. However, Branch is currently undergoing large-scale layoffs, which is also affecting a significant portion of the Nova team. Cliff Wade, the head of customer relations for Nova Launcher, stated, “Currently, over 100 positions have been closed.” Wade noted that before the layoffs, the Nova team consisted of about a dozen people.
For users, Nova Launcher will continue to function as usual. Kevin Barry emphasized that he is the only person who has developed Nova Launcher over the years and is ready to tackle this challenge despite the slowdown in development speed.
