Wildfire Erupts Near Athens, Prompting Evacuations
A devastating wildfire erupted on Sunday afternoon near the picturesque village of Varnava, located northeast of Athens, Greece. The blaze has necessitated the evacuation of two nearby communities as firefighters work tirelessly to contain the rapidly spreading flames, which have been exacerbated by fierce winds.
The fire has been advancing towards Lake Marathon, a critical water reservoir that supplies the capital city of Athens. This situation raises concerns about the potential impact on the city’s water supply amid the ongoing crisis.
In response to the emergency, approximately 250 firefighters, supported by 67 fire engines and numerous dedicated volunteers, have been deployed on the ground. They are receiving assistance from water-carrying vehicles provided by the regional administration and the armed forces. Aerial support has also been mobilized, with 12 aircraft and 6 helicopters engaged in efforts to extinguish the flames, while an additional helicopter has been tasked with coordinating the operations.
