The Dual Nature of Technology in Schools
Digital devices and applications have the potential to be powerful allies in educational environments. However, they can also serve as significant distractions or even tools for harm. Many students find themselves so engrossed in their smartphones during class—scrolling through social media, sending texts, or engaging in online conversations—that it severely disrupts their learning experience.
Moreover, the misuse of technology is a pressing concern. Instances of cyberbullying, where school children and teenagers leverage their phones to harass or exploit peers, have become alarmingly common. There are also troubling cases where students have posted videos of fights or other inappropriate content on social media platforms. Devices like Chromebooks and iPads, despite their educational benefits, can sometimes lead to distractions and even exacerbate issues like bullying.
As a journalist for The New York Times, I cover the intersection of technology and education, focusing on innovative advancements such as artificial intelligence-powered chatbots and tutoring bots designed for classroom settings.
