EU Diplomat Condemns Israeli Airstrike on Gaza School
A high-ranking diplomat from the European Union has expressed his deep horror regarding the shocking images emerging from Gaza, particularly those depicting a school that was struck by an Israeli airstrike, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 100 individuals. Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated unequivocally that “there’s no justification for these massacres.” He emphasized that a ceasefire is imperative to prevent further civilian casualties.
Borrell reiterated the EU’s full support for the appeals made by leaders from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, advocating for the conclusion of ceasefire negotiations along with efforts to secure the release of hostages. He lamented the staggering toll of the conflict, highlighting that over 40,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the violence erupted. Additionally, he criticized Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich for his opposition to a ceasefire.
These remarks from Borrell follow a devastating airstrike that targeted a school, which had been converted into a shelter in central Gaza early on Saturday morning. According to Palestinian authorities, the attack resulted in the deaths of at least 100 individuals and injured dozens more. Among those killed were women, children, and the elderly, with reports indicating that the strikes occurred as many were engaged in morning prayers.
Israel has acknowledged its strike on the Tabeen school located in central Gaza City, asserting that a command center for Hamas was situated within the premises. However, Izzat al-Rishq, a senior official from Hamas, refuted these claims, insisting there were no militants present in the building at the time of the attack.
Importantly, the Tabeen school, like the majority of educational institutions in Gaza, has been utilized as a shelter for those who have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict.
