5G smartphone shipments in India have seen a significant increase. This development not only enhances competition in the technology market but also offers users faster and more efficient communication opportunities. Explore the advantages of 5G.
Significant Increase in 5G Shipments in India’s Smartphone Market
CyberMedia Research (CMR) has published a recent report revealing a significant transformation in India’s smartphone market during the second quarter of 2024. During this period, 5G smartphone shipments increased by 56% compared to the previous year.
5G devices now constitute 79% of the market. Leadership in this area has been seized by Vivo, which ranks first in the 5G smartphone segment with a 21% market share, followed by Samsung with a 20% share.
The report highlights a remarkable annual increase of 200% in 5G smartphones priced between INR 10,000 and INR 13,000. CMR analyst Menka Kumari noted that affordable 5G phones in this price range have significantly supported market growth. Additionally, positive performance was also observed in the premium segment (phones priced above INR 25,000), with a 9% increase in annual sales.
However, despite all this growth in 5G models, the overall smartphone market in India experienced a 4% decline year-on-year. Canalys reported a 1% increase in the market, reaching 36.4 million units, while Counterpoint reported a 2% contraction during the same period.
The “non-smart” phone segment in the market has shown a 1% growth annually in India, while shipments of 2G feature phones decreased by 6%. On the other hand, shipments of 4G feature phones recorded a 39% increase, thanks to Jio, which holds 68% of the market, and Nokia, which has a 28% share. CMR forecasts that the Indian smartphone market will grow by 7-8% in 2024 due to strong demand for 5G and AI-supported smartphones.
