Egyptian Wrestler Arrested in Paris on Sexual Assault Charges
In a shocking turn of events, authorities in Paris have apprehended an Egyptian Olympic wrestler on charges of sexual assault. The incident occurred early on Friday, as the 26-year-old athlete was allegedly involved in an act of groping a woman from behind outside a cafe located on the Austerlitz quay in the 13th arrondissement of the city.
While the prosecutor’s office has not publicly disclosed the name of the wrestler, they confirmed that he was born in Egypt and was in Paris to participate in the ongoing Olympic Games. Subsequent reports from the Egyptian delegation identified the athlete as Mohamed Elsayed, a bronze medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling (under 67 kg) from the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. During the current Paris Games, Elsayed faced elimination in the round of 16, where he competed against Azerbaijani wrestler Hasrat Jafarov on Wednesday.
According to local media, Elsayed was reportedly “completely drunk” at the time of his arrest, raising concerns about his conduct and the implications of his actions. The Egyptian Wrestling Federation has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the incident.
In light of the allegations, the Egyptian Olympic Committee has announced the initiation of an investigation into the matter. They emphasized that if Elsayed is found guilty of the charges, he could face severe repercussions, including the possibility of a lifetime ban from competing in any wrestling events.
