The assault commenced on Tuesday, leading to intense combat, as evidenced by verified battlefield images and statements from Russian sources. While it remains uncertain whether the clashes continued into Wednesday morning, local Russian authorities reported incidents of Ukrainian shelling occurring overnight.

Verified videos obtained by The New York Times depicted Ukrainian armored vehicles being targeted several miles within Russian borders, prompting Moscow to deploy additional troops and fighter jets in response.
