Tragedy Strikes as Hotel Collapses in Kröv, Germany

In a tragic incident in the small western German town of Kröv, part of a hotel collapsed late Tuesday night, resulting in the loss of two lives and trapping several others beneath the debris, according to local authorities. The catastrophe occurred around 11 PM CET, while fourteen guests were present in the establishment.

Emergency responders reported that five individuals managed to escape the collapsing structure unscathed, as they were located in a section of the hotel that remained intact. However, others were not as fortunate and remain trapped within the wreckage.

The ongoing rescue operations are facing significant challenges. The collapse of one floor has created a precarious situation, with two ceilings now lying on top of one another. Joerg Teusch, the fire and disaster protection inspector for the Bernkastel-Wittlich district, emphasized the delicate nature of the rescue efforts, stating, “We have to proceed with caution because the entire building structure is like a house of cards. If we pull on the wrong card, this building is sure to collapse.”

Among those rescued was a 2-year-old child, who was extracted unharmed, along with the child’s mother, who sustained only minor injuries. Unfortunately, the child’s father remains trapped, although Teusch expressed optimism for his eventual rescue, noting, “We all had tears in our eyes, and I still feel the same now. The whole story has a very emotional component because when we arrived and looked at the building, it appeared as if we wouldn’t be able to save anyone.”

As of now, the cause of the structural failure remains under investigation. Regional public broadcaster SWR reported that witnesses described hearing a loud bang followed by a massive cloud of dust at the time of the collapse. Teusch further explained the dire situation, saying, “There was no option to use stairs, house entrances, doors, or windows because they were simply no longer there.”

In response to the emergency, authorities evacuated thirty-one individuals from the vicinity surrounding the damaged hotel to ensure their safety.

Kröv, a charming municipality with approximately 2,200 residents, is nestled along a picturesque stretch of the Moselle River, near the larger resort town of Traben-Trarbach.
