Tragic Hotel Collapse in the Mosel Region of Germany
A small hotel nestled in the picturesque Mosel region of Germany tragically collapsed late on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and sparking a desperate rescue operation for guests trapped beneath the debris, according to local authorities. Rescue teams were actively engaged on Wednesday in efforts to free one person who remained trapped under the ruins of the crumbled structure located in Kröv, a quaint town in southwest Germany, near the border with Luxembourg.
Six other guests, who were caught in the collapse, were successfully rescued. A spokesperson for the police in Trier, a nearby city, reported that the individual still trapped did not appear to be seriously injured and that rescuers were able to maintain communication with them using cellphones and directional microphones.
“The situation is complicated due to the risks posed by the shifting parts of the building,” the spokesperson stated. “This poses a significant challenge. Our foremost priority is to save lives.”
The hotel, which has a rich history dating back to at least the 18th century, suddenly gave way late Tuesday evening while 14 people were present inside. Stefanie Rodermund, a spokeswoman for the Bernkastel-Wittlich district, detailed the events, explaining that after firefighters arrived, five guests managed to escape with no injuries, while six others were rescued later. Unfortunately, two lives were lost in the incident.
“The collapse of the second floor onto the first floor resulted in the middle floor disappearing entirely,” explained Ms. Rodermund, shedding light on the catastrophic nature of the incident.
