BTS Member Suga Apologizes for Alcohol-Related Incident
Suga, a prominent member of the globally acclaimed K-pop group BTS, issued an apology on Wednesday after being involved in an incident where he rode an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol, which is against South Korea’s traffic regulations. The artist, whose real name is Min Yoon-gi, acknowledged that he had his driver’s license revoked and was fined for this violation.
According to the police officer overseeing traffic in Yongsan, a district in Seoul where Suga resides, the artist was discovered alone on the ground after losing control of the scooter. He was subsequently taken to a police station where a breathalyzer test was conducted. The officer indicated that Suga’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit for driving, registering at a minimum of 0.08 percent.
Suga expressed in his statement that he was unaware that operating the scooter while intoxicated was against traffic laws. He recounted the events, explaining that he had fallen while attempting to park the scooter near the entrance of his home. A police officer who arrived at the scene administered the breath test.
“Fortunately, there were no injuries or damages to property during this incident,” Suga stated, adding, “but I would like to sincerely bow down and apologize to everyone affected.”
His management company, Big Hit Music, released a statement acknowledging the situation, revealing that Suga had traveled approximately 500 meters (about a third of a mile) on the scooter while under the influence. The label confirmed that he was wearing a helmet at the time and that he was escorted home by the police after the incident.
Big Hit Music also expressed regret over Suga’s “inappropriate behavior” and mentioned that he would face disciplinary measures as a result.
Currently, Suga, like the other members of BTS, is fulfilling his duty to serve in the South Korean military. However, he is performing an alternative form of service as a social service agent, distinct from the traditional army enlistment of his fellow bandmates. He is anticipated to complete his military service by June.
