Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken recently completed an ambitious tour across Asia, visiting six nations in just six days. His whirlwind journey culminated in a meaningful gesture of friendship in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. During an outdoor event showcasing traditional Mongolian sports such as wrestling, archery, and equestrianism, the Prime Minister graciously presented Mr. Blinken with a horse as a symbol of goodwill.

Mr. Blinken affectionately named his new equine companion “Frontier,” while the Prime Minister captured the moment with a lighthearted horse selfie, reflecting the deepening ties between Mongolia and the United States. Both countries proudly refer to their relationship as a bond with a “third neighbor,” emphasizing their partnership in contrast to the geographical dominance of China and Russia, which share borders with Mongolia.

This gift of a horse is not without precedent; other U.S. officials have similarly received horses from Mongolia. For instance, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was gifted “Celtic,” President Donald J. Trump received “Victory,” and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld was presented with “Montana.” However, like his predecessors, Mr. Blinken will not be taking Frontier back home across the Pacific, serving as a reminder of the unique geographical relationship the U.S. has with Mongolia.

Mongolia operates in a complex multipolar world, navigating its foreign relations with careful consideration, particularly in contrast to the unipolar triumphalism that characterized the post-Cold War era for the United States. Just weeks prior to Mr. Blinken’s visit, Mongolia hosted its annual Khaan Quest peacekeeping exercise, which included participation from Chinese soldiers alongside troops from the United States, Turkey, India, Japan, South Korea, and Qatar. This exercise underscores Mongolia’s strategic role in fostering international cooperation amid the intricate dynamics of regional power.
