Adobe Type1 Font Support Ended
The discontinuation of support for Adobe Type1 fonts is a significant change for designers and developers. In this article, you will find detailed information about the future of Type1 fonts, alternative solutions, and the transition process.
End of Support for Adobe Type1 Fonts
Last June, Microsoft announced the deprecation of some old technologies such as DirectAccess and NTLM. Then, as we entered August, they made another addition to this list by announcing the end of support for Adobe PostScript Type1 fonts.
Adobe PostScript Type1 fonts will no longer be supported on Microsoft Windows operating systems. This decision is based on Adobe having ended support for PostScript Type 1 fonts a year and a half ago. With this change, Adobe users will no longer be able to use these fonts in Photoshop 23.0, Illustrator 27.3, InDesign 18.2, and newer versions.
Microsoft is informing users to remove Adobe PostScript Type1 fonts by going to Settings > Personalization > Fonts. Additionally, developers are advised to test whether their applications function properly without Adobe Type1 fonts.
The deprecation of a feature means that developers will no longer update or work on that specific feature. However, these features may still exist in the operating system for a while longer, and then may completely disappear in future versions.
Some other features recently deprecated by Microsoft in Windows operating systems include:
- Driver Verifier GUI
- Windows Mixed Reality
- Windows Subsystem for Android
- Step Recorder
- MDAG for Office and Edge
These changes can affect software development processes and reshape user experiences. It will be an important step for developers and users to adapt to this transition process.
