As Ukrainian soldiers navigate the desolate remnants of the war-torn city, they remain acutely aware of the ever-watchful Russian drones overhead. The ghostly outlines of shattered buildings loom ominously in the pale glow of the full moon, a stark reminder of the violence that has ravaged this landscape.

Amidst the debris, burned-out vehicles line the streets, while deep craters from relentless artillery strikes punctuate the ground. This once-thriving city, now reduced to ruins, is located in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine and has become a critical battleground in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The sultry air of that hot July night was thick with the acrid scents of destruction — a potent mix of smoke and dust from obliterated structures, coupled with the sharp, sulfurous odor of explosives. The only signs of life amidst this chaos were the brave soldiers of the 32nd Mechanized Brigade, steadfastly clinging to their positions within the confines of a forsaken pharmacy, all while enduring relentless Russian bombardments.

Recently, the brigade graciously permitted us to accompany them, granting us a rare glimpse into the stark realities of life in Toretsk and the formidable challenges faced by Ukrainian forces as they strive to maintain control over the city. While we were allowed to observe, we were instructed to refrain from disclosing specific locations or operational details that could jeopardize their security.

“The most crucial task for Ukrainians is to survive,” stated Major Artem Osadchiy, 28, the commander of a drone battalion within the 32nd. “For the Russians, their objective is clear: to obliterate this Ukrainian city.”

In June, Russia significantly intensified its bombardment of Toretsk, leaving the Ukrainian defenders grappling with the overwhelming onslaught.
