Mobilization of ‘Grannies Against the Right’ Ahead of State Elections

A few weeks prior to the crucial state elections in Thuringia and Saxony, the grassroots movement known as ‘Grannies Against the Right’ is once again making its presence felt across Germany. This dedicated group is calling for citizens to unite in demonstrations aimed at safeguarding democracy. Recently, hundreds of passionate demonstrators took to the streets of Thuringia’s state capital, showcasing their commitment to this cause.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has held a position in the state parliament for a decade and is poised to potentially emerge as the dominant party in the upcoming elections on September 1. In response to this concerning trend, the ‘Grannies Against the Right’ movement is ramping up its efforts to counteract the spread of right-wing ideologies.

Originating in 2018, the first chapters of ‘Grannies Against the Right’ were established as a direct response to the rise of far-right sentiments. Since then, this movement has expanded significantly, with the goal of demonstrating that extremist ideologies do not resonate with the older generation. According to the organizers, the movement has now attracted approximately 30,000 active members, all united in their mission to promote democratic values and oppose right-wing extremism.
