Just days after the assassination of a prominent Hamas leader in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut, the entire Middle East finds itself on a precarious precipice. The atmosphere is thick with anxiety as fears of a wider regional conflict loom large, fueled by Iranian leaders’ vehement promises of retribution that have plunged Israel into a state of profound uncertainty.

Why is an Iranian Attack Anticipated?

Iran has made it abundantly clear that it seeks to avenge the death of Ismail Haniyeh, a high-ranking Hamas official who was killed in Tehran shortly after he and other leaders affiliated with Iranian-backed militant groups attended the inauguration of the new Iranian president. While Israeli officials have refrained from confirming or denying their involvement in breaching Iran’s defenses, both Iranian and Hamas representatives quickly pointed fingers at Israel, declaring their intent to retaliate. According to three Iranian officials briefed on internal communications, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly issued a directive for Iran to strike Israel directly. In a statement on Monday, Nasser Kanaan, the spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, emphasized that “Tehran is not looking to escalate conflicts in the region, but it is imperative to punish” Israel for its actions.

What Role Does Lebanon Play in the Crisis?

The assassination of Mr. Haniyeh came shortly after an Israeli airstrike in Beirut took the life of Fuad Shukr, a key commander of Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militia operating in Lebanon. This incident exacerbated tensions that were already running high between Israel and Iran, along with its regional proxies. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, proclaimed last week that the conflict with Israel has entered a new and dangerous phase, threatening significant retaliation in response to the recent killings.

Hezbollah has been engaged in a series of retaliatory attacks against Israel for months, further intensifying concerns that the region is on the brink of a larger war. The militia has launched thousands of rockets and drones at Israeli targets, asserting that these actions are in solidarity with Hamas, which also enjoys Iranian backing. In response, Israel has conducted retaliatory strikes and has begun evacuating tens of thousands of its citizens from northern regions near the border with Lebanon.
