Elon Musk Revives Lawsuit Against OpenAI
Elon Musk has reignited a legal battle against OpenAI, the company behind the widely-discussed A.I. chatbot ChatGPT. This resurgence of the lawsuit highlights a long-standing conflict that dates back six years, originating from a power struggle at the San Francisco-based startup.
The newly filed complaint, submitted on Monday in federal court in Northern California, echoes the allegations of the original lawsuit. It asserts that OpenAI, along with its two co-founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, have violated the foundational agreement of the company by prioritizing commercial success over their commitment to public welfare.
Interestingly, Musk had previously withdrawn his initial lawsuit just seven weeks ago, without providing any reasons. This withdrawal came just a day before a judge was scheduled to make a ruling on whether to dismiss the case.
According to the current lawsuit, after collaborating with Musk to establish OpenAI in 2015 and vowing to develop artificial intelligence responsibly for the benefit of humanity, Altman and Brockman have allegedly strayed from this mission. The suit claims they did so by entering into a lucrative partnership with Microsoft, which is valued in the billions.
In a dramatic tone, the lawsuit describes Musk’s feelings of betrayal, stating, “Mr. Musk was profoundly wronged by Mr. Altman and his associates. The treachery and deception involved are of Shakespearean proportions.”
As of now, OpenAI has not provided any immediate response to requests for comments regarding the lawsuit. In a prior blog post addressing Musk’s initial legal action, Altman and his colleagues at OpenAI expressed their intention to seek dismissal of the claims, reaffirming their goal of advancing the public good through the development of artificial general intelligence (A.G.I.)—a form of AI capable of performing any cognitive task that the human brain can accomplish.
