Wind Turbine Innovation: Quality Over Size
In the realm of wind energy, the mantra “bigger is not always better” resonates strongly, as emphasized by Felix Henseler, the CEO of ZF Wind Power, during his interview with Euronews. ZF Wind Power is at the forefront of European wind power generation, playing a pivotal role in advancing sustainable energy solutions.
The company specializes in the production of gearboxes, which are critical components in the operation of wind turbines. Henseler noted, “From a logistical or design standpoint, scaling up production is feasible. This current model is a 7.2 MW turbine, and transitioning to machines that can reach 15 or even 18 MW is certainly within our technological capabilities.” His remarks were made while showcasing the advanced machinery at ZF’s manufacturing facility in Lommel.
However, Henseler pointed out significant considerations that come into play when discussing larger turbines. “We need to maintain a focus on industrializing our processes, optimizing our production lines, and ensuring the highest quality standards are met. It’s essential to minimize errors and reduce costs associated with production and quality control,” he explained.
He further elaborated, stating, “At this stage, our priority is to stabilize our operations with the current turbine size. These are already substantial machines, characterized by their efficiency and advanced technology, perfectly designed to meet the energy needs of the coming decade. In our current onshore projects, there isn’t an immediate necessity to pursue larger turbine models.” Henseler concluded his insights with a firm stance on the value of quality in the wind energy sector.
