With the beginning of a new month, the results of Steam’s monthly Hardware and Software Survey have also been revealed. In July 2024, an interesting change occurred; while Windows 11 was almost catching up to Windows 10, it has now started to lose users. According to Valve’s data, this month Windows 11 fell below the 46% threshold and now holds a rate of 45.81% among users. This indicates that the operating system lost 0.82 points during July.

On the other hand, Windows 10 increased to 50.16%, gaining 0.74 points. One of the reasons users are shifting towards these changes is that Windows 11 has not yet been fully embraced by some users. Interestingly, although Valve no longer supports Windows 7 and 8/8.1 on Steam, some users continue to use these older versions. According to the survey data, 0.41% of all Windows users are on 64-bit Windows 7 (+0.01 points) and 0.08% are on 64-bit Windows 8.1.

What about Linux and macOS users? In general, a vast majority of Steam users prefer Windows over other operating systems. 96.55% of survey participants use Windows (-0.06 points), while 2.08% prefer Linux and 1.37% prefer Mac computers (+0.06 points). Among the most popular Linux distributions on Steam are Arch Linux (0.17%), Linux Mint 21.3 (0.11%), and Ubuntu 22.04 (0.08%).

Looking at the hardware side of the July 2024 survey, we see that Intel processors maintain their lead with 67.40% (+0.60). Following them are AMD processors with 32.54% (-0.61). Microsoft’s position in the processor market is currently at the bottom with 0.05%.

  • Most preferred CPU core count: 6 (32.68%)
  • Most preferred RAM capacity: 16GB (45.93%)
