Thousands of passionate supporters took to the streets of Venezuela’s capital on Saturday, rallying behind an opposition candidate whom they firmly believe won the recent presidential election by a significant margin. Despite these claims, authorities have announced that President Nicolás Maduro emerged as the victor in last Sunday’s national elections, yet they have failed to provide any official voting tallies to substantiate this assertion.
The atmosphere was charged as Maduro’s government cracked down on dissent by arresting hundreds of opposition supporters who protested in the aftermath of the disputed election results. In a further escalation, Maduro has threatened to imprison leading opposition figure María Corina Machado along with her chosen presidential candidate, Edmundo González.
As the rally unfolded in Caracas, supporters erupted in chants and songs, welcoming Machado, who has been living in hiding since Tuesday due to concerns for her safety and freedom. The situation escalated when masked assailants violently invaded the opposition’s headquarters on Friday, stealing documents and vandalizing the premises.
Amidst the fervor, Maduro brandished a Venezuelan flag, declaring that the era of a government responsible for forcing millions to flee the country was nearing its end. “We have already won the election. Now begins a new phase. Just as it took us a considerable amount of time to achieve this electoral victory, we now enter a period that we experience day by day. But never have we been as strong as we are today. Never has the regime been as weak as it is today,” Machado proclaimed to the thousands gathered around her.
As the rally concluded, Machado was discreetly handed a plain shirt and swiftly whisked away on the back of a motorcycle for her safety. Meanwhile, González, who continues to remain in hiding, was notably absent from the event.
In a competing show of support, Maduro urged his own followers to join him in what he called the “mother of all marches,” planned to take place in another part of Caracas on the same day.
