This sweeping crackdown is a direct reaction to a significant and embarrassing security lapse that allowed for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent leader of Hamas. This information comes from two Iranian sources familiar with the ongoing investigation.
The arrests were prompted by the fatal explosion that occurred early on Wednesday, which claimed the life of Haniyeh while he was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s new president. At the time of the attack, he was staying at the military-run guesthouse situated in the northern part of the capital.
This intense reaction to Haniyeh’s assassination highlights the severity of the security failure that Iran’s leadership faces. The attack took place within a heavily fortified compound just hours after the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected president, which has raised serious concerns about Iran’s capability to safeguard its own territory as well as its allies.
Ali Vaez, the Iran director for the International Crisis Group, commented on the implications of this incident, stating, “The perception that Iran can neither protect its homeland nor its key allies could be fatal for the Iranian regime. It essentially sends a message to its adversaries that if they cannot overthrow the Islamic Republic, they can still eliminate its key figures.”
