Tragic Attack on Mogadishu Beach by Al Shabab Militants

In a harrowing incident on Friday evening, a suicide bomber and armed gunmen from the Islamist militant group Al Shabab launched a brutal assault on the bustling Lido Beach in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital. This attack has claimed the lives of at least 32 individuals and left numerous others injured, marking it as one of the deadliest assaults in recent months, according to police reports released on Saturday.

Al Shabab, a group linked to Al-Qaeda, has been engaged in a relentless insurgency against the internationally recognized federal government of Somalia for over 17 years. This militant group has previously targeted the popular beach area, which is frequented by businesspeople, government officials, and families seeking leisure activities.

“More than 32 civilians have tragically lost their lives in this attack, with around 63 others suffering injuries, some of which are critical,” stated Abdifatah Adan Hassan, a police spokesman, during a press conference. The attack commenced late on Friday when the suicide bomber detonated an explosive device, allowing gunmen to infiltrate the area, as reported by witnesses and police officials.

A police officer named Mohamed Omar reported that the assailants indiscriminately shot at civilians, causing widespread panic and chaos. Fortunately, security forces responded swiftly, managing to neutralize the attackers and bring the situation under control.

Al Shabab has been responsible for numerous violent attacks and bombings in Mogadishu and various regions across Somalia, particularly as the government intensifies its military offensive against them. The Lido area has been the site of several previous assaults, including a significant six-hour siege on a beachside hotel earlier in 2023, which resulted in the deaths of six civilians and injuries to ten others. Additionally, a deadly car bomb explosion at a café in the capital last month left five people dead. In March, a prolonged siege of another hotel in Mogadishu led to the deaths of three individuals and injuries to 27, interrupting a brief period of relative calm in the ongoing conflict.
