The recent opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics catapulted French D.J. Barbara Butch into a whirlwind of both fame and infamy on the global stage. Known in France for her bold persona as an outspoken lesbian and a passionate advocate for the rights of plus-size individuals, Butch, whose stage name captures her vibrant spirit, made a striking appearance. In one of the ceremony’s climactic scenes titled “Festivity,” she donned a crown and stood behind her mixing board, captivating the audience.

For a dazzling 45 minutes, a diverse array of performers, including talented drag queens, paraded their artistry along an elevated catwalk that extended across the stage. The grand finale featured the French singer Philippe Katerine, who made a dramatic entrance from beneath a colossal silver dome painted in vibrant blue and clad in minimal clothing. He serenaded the audience with part of his song “Nude,” adding to the spectacle.

However, this bold artistic expression sparked immediate outrage among certain segments of the public, particularly those who perceived it as a mockery of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic “The Last Supper,” thus interpreting it as an affront to Christianity. Despite artistic director Thomas Jolly’s clarifications that the inspiration stemmed from a grand pagan festival celebrating the gods of Olympus, the backlash persisted. Notably, former President Donald J. Trump took to social media to label the scene as “a disgrace,” amplifying the outcry.

In response to the vitriolic backlash, Butch filed a formal complaint for cyber-harassment, prompting the Paris prosecutor’s office to initiate an investigation into potential discrimination based on religion or sexual orientation. Following her lead, Jolly also sought legal recourse, resulting in an investigation into his circumstances as well.

As a Jewish woman from a working-class background, Butch has grown accustomed to facing hate, although the intensity of this particular episode has been unprecedented. She shared that her family history includes a painful chapter of antisemitism that compelled her grandmother to leave France for Israel many years ago, highlighting the deep-rooted challenges she has navigated throughout her life.
