On Friday, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced that Vice President Kamala Harris has garnered sufficient votes from Democratic delegates to become the party’s nominee for the presidency. While the online voting process will continue until Monday, Harris’ campaign celebrated the moment she surpassed the threshold necessary to secure a majority of delegate votes.

This significant announcement follows Harris’ campaign revealing an impressive fundraising total of €286 million for the previous month. This staggering amount demonstrates a renewed confidence among donors, who were once hesitant about the prospects of the upcoming election featuring President Joe Biden as well as his former vice president. In stark contrast, former President Donald Trump and his associated committees reported a fundraising total of €127 million for July, highlighting Harris’ substantial financial edge.

During a campaign rally on July 30, 2024, in Atlanta, Harris expressed her excitement about her historic candidacy. She is set to become the first woman of color to lead a major party’s ticket. In a call with supporters, she conveyed her gratitude, stating, “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee.” Harris added, “It’s not going to be easy, but we are going to get this done. As your future president, I know we are up to this fight.”

Harrison assured the party that they would unite behind Vice President Kamala Harris to showcase the strength of the Democratic Party during their upcoming convention in Chicago later this month. Although the Democratic National Committee did not disclose specific details regarding the delegate vote count, including numbers or state-by-state breakdowns, the virtual event maintained an atmosphere reminiscent of a telethon. Campaign officials monitored the delegate-counting process, which had a predictable outcome.

With no other candidates contesting her nomination, Harris quickly consolidated support among Democrats following President Biden’s endorsement. While Democrats will still conduct a traditional state-by-state roll call during the convention—a customary method for selecting a nominee—it will primarily serve as a ceremonial formality due to the prior online voting results.
