The Israeli military announced on Thursday that it has successfully killed Muhammad Deif, the elusive and highly sought-after leader of Hamas’s military wing. Deif has been one of Israel’s most wanted militants for years and is believed to be a key architect behind the devastating attack on Israel that occurred on October 7.

This claim from Israel comes after weeks of intense speculation regarding Deif’s fate, particularly following an airstrike on July 13 that targeted the secretive Hamas commander in southern Gaza. At that time, the Israeli military was cautious, not definitively confirming whether Deif had been killed. To date, Hamas has not provided a clear confirmation or denial about the reports surrounding his death.

The Israeli military stated that its conclusion was reached based on intelligence assessments, but it has not provided specific evidence to substantiate this claim. In their statement, they said, “Following an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that Muhammad Deif was eliminated in the strike.”

According to the Gazan health ministry, the airstrike on that day resulted in the deaths of at least 90 individuals in the vicinity. However, the ministry’s figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

Deif has survived multiple assassination attempts by Israel in the past and has held the position of the No. 2 leader within Hamas in Gaza. His reported death marks the highest-ranking Hamas commander that Israel claims to have killed since it escalated its military operations following the October 7 attack.

The Israeli government has explicitly stated that one of its primary objectives in the ongoing war is the elimination of Hamas’s leadership. If the claims regarding Deif’s death are confirmed, it would be regarded as a significant victory in that endeavor. However, the future impact on Hamas’s operations remains uncertain, as Israel has previously eliminated senior commanders only to witness the group swiftly replace them.
