For months now, diplomats and analysts across foreign capitals have been increasingly concerned that ongoing political turmoil in the United States could embolden aggression on the global stage. This worry spans multiple fronts, including Russia’s continued military aggression in Ukraine, North Korea’s unpredictable nuclear ambitions, and China’s assertive territorial claims in the South China Sea. As the situation escalates, the geopolitical landscape is becoming more complex.

Now, with less than 100 days remaining before Americans head to the polls to elect a new president, this broader crisis has manifested dramatically in the Middle East. The targeted assassinations of leaders from Hezbollah and Hamas in Beirut and Tehran have heightened fears of a potential regional conflict—one that the United States, embroiled in its own domestic political drama, may struggle to mitigate or even control.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken asserted that the United States had neither participated in nor been informed about the operation in Tehran, which the Iranian government quickly attributed to Israel. For many observers, Mr. Blinken’s remarks underscored a troubling power vacuum in the region.

“We anticipated that it would be Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, or Kim Jong-un who might exploit this period of U.S. distraction,” commented Vali R. Nasr, a professor of international affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. “However, nobody expected an ally of the United States to take such bold action.”

Mr. Nasr, who served in the State Department during the Obama administration, added, “This situation is likely to create considerable anxiety across the region. It is never advantageous for the United States to be perceived as lacking control.”
