Violence Erupts in Southport Following Tragic Stabbing Incident

In a shocking turn of events on Tuesday evening, nearly 40 police officers sustained injuries in the northwestern English town of Southport. This disturbance occurred during a day dedicated to mourning the tragic loss of children who were victims of a recent stabbing attack. The somber atmosphere was violently disrupted by far-right protesters.

A large contingent of demonstrators, identified by police as supporters of the English Defence League—a well-known far-right extremist group—began to assault a local mosque in Southport. This information was confirmed by a statement from the Merseyside Police Service, which is responsible for policing the area.

Authorities noted that the attack on the mosque and the subsequent rioting were seemingly fueled by rampant online disinformation regarding the stabbing incident that took place on Monday. During that horrifying attack, an assailant tragically killed three children and injured eight others, as well as two adults, at a dance class in Southport.

In the aftermath of the attack, police apprehended a 17-year-old suspect from Cardiff, Wales, on charges of murder and attempted murder. In accordance with British law concerning minors, the police have opted not to disclose the identity of the suspect. They also issued warnings regarding the circulation of incorrect names on social media.

Alex Goss, the Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, addressed the situation on Tuesday night, stating, “There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody, and some individuals are using this to incite violence and disorder on our streets.”

He further emphasized, “We have already confirmed that the person arrested was born in the U.K., and this unfounded speculation serves no purpose during this critical time.”
